Nutrition Tips

Well-balanced nutrition is key in maintaining your body weight, improving your strength and energy as well as assisting your body in managing your condition.

Use the following tips to maintain a healthy diet:

  • Eat small and frequent snacks throughout the day.

Some useful snacks to keep around include: cheese, nuts, granola or trail mix, popcorn, yogurt, cakes or cookies made with whole grains

  • Eat high-calorie, high-protein foods – see suggestions below for inspiration.
  • Drink fluids between meals instead of during meals.
  • If you lose your appetite, consider commercial nutrition supplements like milkshakes and puddings.
  • You may need to add vitamins and mineral supplements to your diet. Before you do, consult your healthcare team and keep in mind that “natural” does not always mean safe.

HOW TO ADD MORE PROTEIN TO YOUR DIET

  • Add cheese to your crackers and toast
  • Grate or melt cheese on your soup, mashed potatoes or vegetables
  • Use milk instead of water in hot cereals, soups, casseroles or hot chocolate
  • Add powdered milk to your muffin recipe
  • Add yogurt or peanut butter to your blended smoothie or milkshake
  • Add hard-boiled eggs to your salads
  • Sprinkle nuts and seeds on your salad, pudding or ice cream

FOODS THAT ARE HIGH IN CALORIES THAT CAN HELP YOU INCREASE YOUR CALORIE INTAKE

  • Butter – melt it and add it to your potatoes, rice, pasta or cooked vegetables
  • Cream – add whipped cream on your pancakes, fruits, milkshake, or hot chocolate
  • Cheese – add hard cheese to your scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt with fat content higher than 2% – eat it with fruits and nuts for dessert
  • Nuts – add them to your baked goods and stir-fries

Think about keeping a food diary during your cancer treatment to help you find out which foods work best for you!

Please consult your healthcare team on nutrition if you have any questions.

Physical Activity During Cancer Treatment

Physical activity has all sorts of benefits for you, from stimulating your appetite to helping to reduce side effects like nausea, fatigue and constipation. Before starting an exercise program, consult your doctor.

SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES AND TIPS WHEN IT COMES TO EXERCISE DURING TREATMENT:

  • Start slow – go for walks and slowly increase your pace.
  • Try to exercise a little every day – housework like vacuuming counts too.
  • Exercise when you have the most energy during the day.
  • Stop and rest when you are tired.
  • Make it fun! Exercise with friends or good music.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Focus on exercise that makes use of your large muscle groups, such as your thighs, abdomen, chest and back.
  • If you have low white blood cell counts or a weakened immune system, avoid public places like gyms.
  • If you are receiving radiotherapy, avoid swimming pools as chlorine can irritate your skin.

Remember to check with your doctor before starting a program of physical activity, even if you used to exercise regularly before your diagnosis. You want it to be safe and effective for you.
